Gil Scott Heron The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. The track, which was regularly used for black power campaigns, is credited with influencing some of the biggest names in hip-hop, including rappers Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Kanye West, who sampled Scott-Heron on his latest, critically-acclaimed album My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy.He mixed minimalistic percussion and spoken-word performances tinged with politics in a style he sometimes referred to as bluesology. He recorded more than a dozen albums and wrote a handful of books.

Among Scott-Heron’s other accomplishments included his acclaimed 1972 collaborative LP with Brian Jackson, Free Will, his 1978 hit “Angel Dust”, which peaked at #15 on the R&B charts, and an appearance at the No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1979. In the 1980s, Scott-Heron also toured extensively with saxophonist Ron Holloway.R&B star Usher writes, "I just learned of the lost of a very important poet R.I.P. Gil Scott Heron. The revolution will be live!!", while rapper Kweli states, "wow. The rest of my night I'm gonna listen to Gil Scot (sic) Heron. We love you brother. We will miss you. RIP."
